Beward SCAM in Neighborhood

October 5, 2009
Beginning around October 1, Forest Hills, Wales Gardens and other neighborhood residents have been the victims of a door-to-door scam.  At least  two teams each consisting of two personable, smooth-talking young adult white guys in t-shirts (some wearing baseball caps) came to their doors at dusk.  Others have been approached by a team of two young adult white teenage girls but we haven't learned yet if it was for the same thing. They claimed that their parents lived on certain streets in the Forest Hills, Hollywood/Rose Hill and other neighborhoods and that they were trying to go to a baseball tournament.  They said were collecting money to donate books to children at Richland Memorial Hospital and that the team with the most donations would get an incentive.  The neighbor asked if it was a tax-deductible contribution with a receipt.  When they said yes, wrote a check to QSI .

After they left, the neighbor looked at the receipt and it is from Quality Subscription, Inc. of Buford Georgia.  They never mentioned magazine subscriptions to her!  In the section that says "person to receive magazine", they wrote in the address of Richland Memorial but with no magazine named.

AARP has written up this scam.  Here is a link to the AARP's report on this scam, using these same techniques:

The stories vary from neighborhood to neighborhood. If you have been approached and written a check, notify your bank to stop payment immediately. If someone comes to your door with this approach, call 911 and report the incident. Chief Tandy is aware of the problem and working to apprehend the scammers.
